Did you get your luminaries?

Most Down East residents should have received their luminaries.  A few residents on Elbow and Roberts haven't received their luminaries.  I will deliver them tomorrow afternoon.

At that point all 126 houses will have luminaries.  Remember we are lighting them at 7pm on Saturday night :-)

Luminary update...

Well it was a bit chilly...and wet, but many people made it out to pick up their Luminary kits.

Looking for some volunteers to scoop sand and help deliver approximately 60 more.

Luminaries...

To All,

It only took 2 hours for two people to assemble 126 Kits from over 1800 white paper bags and candles.  Each house gets one plastic grocery bag with their luminaries.  Bring your own bag for sand.  See you Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

We could always use more volunteers ( and warm coffee & cocoa ) on Saturday.

Notice: Pickup your luminaries!

We are preparing to light the luminaries on December 24th.  Your "kits" will be ready to pickup soon.  This is what you need to know...

When:  Saturday December 17th, 9am-5pm

Where:  End of Old Swedesford Road near 1 Kane Dr.

How:  Luminary kits for each house including bags and candles will be ready for you.  Bring double plastic grocery bags for your sand.  If you have a long curb front, bring extra.

Tips

  • Pickup for your neighbor's who may not be able to do it themselves.
  • If you know of anyone who may need assistance with set up and lighting, we have volunteers who can assist.
  • No dues are to be collected this year as we have enough in the treasury to cover all costs for luminaries.  A quick shout out to those who have managed DECA during the previous years.  You did a great job of collecting dues and looking for ways to save money.  Next year we will need to collect dues again.
  • Please contact Kristen Cannella (610-993-3374) if you are unable to assemble your luminaries.  Leave a voicemail with your name and address and we will be sure you get your items.
  • It helps to "cuff" the top 1/2 - 1 inch of the bag to keep it open and retain its shape.

DECA Luminaries: How long have we been lighting them?

Hillside Drive

Down East Residents,

Last year I asked the following question on Next Door.  This is the answer I received.
Question: Anybody know how long we have been doing this? I think it has been something like 40 years.
Answer:  Bev Smith from Down East · 22 Jan
...luminaries started in Downeast in 1975 when Jerry Shea was president. He brought the idea from his home in Cleveland. And when you drove to the top of a General a Warren Village those were the only lights you could see :)

For those of you new to DECA.  We light Luminaries ( paper bag, sand and a candle ) each year on the curb of our properties when the sun goes down on 12/24.

We could use and hour or two of help from some volunteers of all ages to help.  We will take care of ordering the materials.

Email or call me to lend a hand :-)

Neighbor Request: AFTER SCHOOL CHILDCARE NEEDED

AFTER SCHOOL CHILDCARE NEEDED
I am in need of after school childcare for my 8 and 9 year old children three days a week. The hours would be from 4:15 to approximately 5:30pm. Responsibilities would include getting them off the school bus, letting them into the house and getting them a snack. No driving required. The ideal candidate would be a responsible high school student looking for a few hours of childcare experience a week.

Please call or text Jen at 484-201-8414 with interest/ questions.

Postponing the Down East picnic...need more help...

Hello Down East,

Having a hard time getting my act in gear and looking at a busy schedule 8/13 isn't looking good.  So, rather than have it all blow up at the last minute I thought I would see if I can get some more help from folks.

So, let me ask.  Is there anybody out there who would be interested in helping to organize the event?  We will move the picnic to a better weekend based on your availability.  Also, thinking of simplifying things a bit however we can.

At this rate, maybe it will be a Fall Fest!  LOL

Down East Picnic: August 13th is the date!

Thank you to all who responded to the survey!

Anybody want to volunteer to organize it?  I'll be supporting you, but, I'm not the best guy to remember to do things in a timely manner ;-)  I received some interest via email so I'll reach out there too.

Again, here is that overview again...
  • each family brings
    • a covered dish
    • your own drinks
  • volunteers for
    • music ( maybe an ipod and a boom box nothing too fancy is necessary )
    • cooking burgers and hotdogs ( usually we rent a grill and buy the burgers and hot dogs )
    • coordinating the delivery of a porta-poty
    • bringing a big drink cooler filled with water, lemonade etc
  • I will coordinate with East Whiteland to have the gate opened to our park, etc.
  • Other ideas are welcome.  Maybe your kids would like to perform a song?  How about face painting?
I'm not so concerned about it being a fancy shin dig.  I'm just looking to meet new neighbors and say hello to those I haven't seen in a while.

DECA Summer Picnic...are you in?

Hello Down East residents,

Hope all is well.  Summer is in full swing.  I'm sure some of you have been down the shore already or perhaps you have something planned.  We have been pretty busy with the Summer concert series at Valley Creek Park, Jordan's high school graduation, Kayla's Summer job and Kevin's Tour de Shore bike ride.  I feel like I have some time to do something outside the family.

I was recently speaking with a fellow Down East neighbor and he asked, "Are we going to have a Summer picnic?"  Well folks, I'm in if you are in!  This is a community driven event where we all pitch in.

    • a covered dish

Based upon the feedback I get in the next week or so, I'll be able to tell if we have enough interest.  If you want to have a DECA Summer Picnic email me.
